Messe Berlin maintains its leading position on the convention market
19.06.2007
Since1979: 16,500 events with total attendance of 10.6 million
As it marks its 28th anniversary the International Congress Center Berlin (ICC Berlin) can claim a remarkable record of success. Since its inauguration on 2 April 1979 the 80 halls and rooms of this building have been the venue for over 16,500 conferences and entertainment events with a total attendance of 10.6 million. This corresponds to a daily average of 1.6 events and 1,038 visitors. Over six million specialists have been registered at the 14,869 conferences, of whom more than 2.6 million (43%) came from outside Berlin. In addition, in the entertainment sector, the 1,700 shows attracted a total audience of 4.6 million. Over the past 28 years expenditure by out-of-town convention attendees has generated an influx of purchasing power amounting to some 1.7 billion euros for Berlin. For the third time in succession Messe Berlin has received the World Travel Award for its convention activities in the ICC Berlin. In the category “Europe’s Leading Conference & Convention Centre 2006” Europe’s largest meetings venue has been chosen as the leading conference centre. The votes were cast by over 200,000 tourism experts from every continent, from travel agencies, hotels, airlines, tourism offices and other tourism institutions. This is the thirteenth time that the London-based media company World Travel Awards Ltd. has presented the World Travel Award.

15th ECCO 2009 from 19 to 23 September at the ICC Berlin
Once again the International Congress Center Berlin (ICC Berlin) is able to announce news of a successful bid. This week the Federation of European Cancer Societies (FECS) made its decision to hold the 15th European Cancer Conference ECCO 2009 from 19 to 23 September 2009 at the ICC Berlin. The FECS is the umbrella organisation of all European scientific professional associations involved with research on and the prevention and treatment of cancer. Up to 12,000 medical specialists from Europe and overseas are expected to attend this year’s annual cancer conference.
Berlin in greater demand than ever as a convention venue
Participants in the Associations Conference Forum (AC Forum) displayed keen interest in the holding of large scale medical conventions in the German capital during a presentation that took place in the ICC Berlin. According to a recent survey by the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Amsterdam, Berlin ranks fourth in the world. By 2008 no less than 71 major conventions will have been held by various economic and scientific associations in the ICC Berlin, with a total attendance of 280,000. This has been confirmed by steadily increasing demand over many years, which has made this the world’s leading convention centre for large scale medical conferences with more than 4,000 participants.
During their recent 8th General Meeting at the Hotel Palace in Berlin delegates to the AC Forum confirmed their intention of organising more large medical conventions with accompanying exhibitions in Berlin. With its International Congress Center Berlin (ICC Berlin) in particular, the city meets the highest standards required of a convention venue in terms of infrastructure and technical facilities. The associations represented by the AC Forum are responsible for staging conventions with attendances ranging from 3,500 to 30,000. A decision by the delegates in favour of Berlin would represent a potential purchasing power totalling 400 million euros.
